View RecordsIn North Carolina, the court judgment that grants a divorce comes from the clerk’s office in the county where the divorce was granted.
The North Carolina Judicial Branch says a copy of a divorce judgment is obtained from the clerk of court’s office in the county where the divorce was granted, for a fee. For a Wake County divorce, that means the Wake County clerk. Online Portal case information may help you identify the case, but the clerk is the official route for the judgment copy.
This narrow task becomes simple once the document type is clear.
| Need | Official route | What it gives you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Divorce judgment / decree | Wake County Clerk of Court | The court judgment that granted the divorce | Request the actual copy from the clerk; a fee applies |
| Case information / locator | North Carolina eCourts Portal or clerk public access | Public case information that can help identify the file | Online information is a locator; use the clerk for the official judgment copy |
| Divorce certificate | N.C. Vital Records / applicable vital-record route | A vital-record certificate showing the divorce event | It is not the court judgment/decree |
Use the names as they appeared in the case when possible.
If Portal or prior paperwork gives you the case number, include it.
A filing/divorce year helps narrow an older search.
Ask the receiving organization whether it requires a certified copy rather than an ordinary copy.

The standard statutory units in G.S. 7A-308 are $2 for the first page of each document copied, $0.25 for each additional page or fraction, and $3 for a certificate under seal. These units are not a personalized or automatically additive total: subsection (b) exempts services performed as part of the regular disposition of an action, proceeding or estate and provides a greater-service-fee rule for combined services. Subsection (b1) exempts qualifying copy/certificate requests by appointed or contracted Indigent Defense Services attorneys during the representation. Ask the clerk which charges or exceptions apply to your judgment copy.
